Uncharacteristic Service from Maelstrom Games

Or I should say, uncharacteristicly stellar service.

I’ve been a customer of Maelstrom Games for a good number of months now, ever since I started my miniature wargaming hobby early this year.

They offer fantastic prices, often 15% off the MRSP, and free delivery worldwide for all orders above 10 pounds. The latter was the main attraction for me, since most other companies charge at least $20 just for shipping alone.

But “cheap” often comes at a price, and in this case it was speed.

My orders from Maelstrom typically takes a good number of days to be processed, and after that I usually need to wait for 2 whole weeks before finally receiving the goods. That’s a total wait of almost 3 weeks from the time my credit card is charged, till ultimate delivery.

But something unbelievable just happened to me.

I had put in my order last Friday, 28th August 2009.

The Maelstrom guys pleasantly surprised me by having this order shipped out under 12 hours from receiving my order.

And then, I was absolutely stupefied when the postman came knocking on my door yesterday afternoon, carrying my parcel.

That was a mere 3 working days from when I had placed my order!

This kind of blazing speed is something I’d expect from DHL or FedEx, and even then only after dishing out dozens of dollars for their express option.

I’m seriously thinking that maybe this was an error on their part or something.

In any case, I’m a happy man!

WordPress for BlackBerry Working!

A new beta version (0.9.0.149) of “WordPress for BlackBerry” was released some time ago, which finally added the much-requested feature of supporting BIS connections.

I’ve just downloaded it, and it works with SK Telecom (my service provider)!

Kudos to the dev team!

To Blog, or to Micro-Blog?

To blog, or to micro-blog? That is the question.

With the advent of Twitter, micro-blogging has seemingly taken the world by storm. Heck, even President Obama is known to do it.

While you need to sit down and focus in order to write a blog post (or at least I do), Twitter lowers that “preparatory barrier” by forcing you to write your micro-post (which they call a “tweet”) in 140 characters or less. Mind you, that’s 140 LETTERS, not words.

That sounds fine in theory, and even I “tweet” every now and then. (http://twitter.com/maxahn)

But that 140-character limit is a double-edged sword, and it often grates on me.

The thing is that I actually like writing, though I seldom manage to gather up enough drive to write a long post. But on the other hand, I honestly don’t think that I can write anything meaningful within a mere 140 letters.

I find that my tweets often degenerate into banal blurts of day-to-day happenings, devoid of any flavor. (“I’m going on a vacation, yay!”)

From what I can see from others, they seem to share my problem too, even though they may not see it as such.

I think that’s what causing me to tweet less and less.

But that’s not making me write more posts on my blog either, so I’m just ending up writing less.

Or maybe I’m just getting lazier with age?
